St. Elmo is an alternative name for St. Erasmus of Formia, who is the patron saint of sailors. His name is also rendered, sometimes, as Erasmo.
According to Wikipedia, "Sailors may have considered St. Elmo's fire as a good omen (as a sign of the presence of their patron saint)."
